They cover a wide range of latin rhythms and styles from Cuban salsa to Brazilian samba, to lambada, merengue and bolero. The music is well seasoned with funk and jazz elements and includes material by Gloria Estefan, Carlos Santana, Sergio Mendes, Tito Puente, and Eddie Palmieri among others. Hot Mambo has performed extensively at festivals and events, including the Queensland Festival of Music, Brisbane Festival, Valley Jazz Festival, River Festival, Woodford Folk Festival, Kangaroo Point Jazz and Blues Festival, Hervey Bay Multicultural Festival, Queensland Day, Groove and Grape, as well as having a 3 ½ year residency at the Treasury Casino (Brisbane) and playing for numerous private functions. They have one CD, Smoke Signals, which dates to 2002. They look forward to making a second CD later in 2008. ![]() Hot Mambo Hot Mambo’s secret ingredient is a strong grounding in jazz. All the members are accomplished musicians in their own right and bounce spontaneously and instinctively off each other in the jazz tradition. With close to 10 years experience together, the band’s performances are polished, cohesive and dynamic. They frequently perform with Queensland Salsa Dance champions Ellie Torres and Carlos Galiano who are truly spectacular dancers. Hot Mambo started as a student ensemble project at the Queensland Conservatorium in 1999. But lead singer and band manager Wendy Murray had so fallen for the infectious, high-energy grooves of latin music that she kept the project going and has turned the band into Queensland’s hottest latin-jazz dance band. Louise Denson has contributed musical direction, keys, back vocals, compositions and arrangements to the mix. |
